Tuesday pickets for whistleblowers continue…

AAPP will have another gathering outside the Attorney General’s Department at 3 National Cct Barton, 12.30 – 1.30pm this coming Tuesday 15th Nov. Last Tuesday we were at MP Andrew Leigh’s office, and on 22nd Nov we will be at MP Alicia Payne’s office at 221 London Cct, Civic.

We will also be writing to PM Albanese urging him to talk to President Biden about Julian Assange. Now that the US mid-term elections are coming to a close and the result seems better for the Democrats than expected, it would be a very opportune time for Biden to make the decision to drop the charges and extradition request for Julian. Please write or phone the PM and leave a message for him about the urgency and timeliness of a decision to free Assange now.

We have recently written to AG Dreyfus again about the need to have David McBride and Richard Boyle’s charges dropped. See our website for details.

Inquiry into International Armed Conflict Decision Making – Submissions close this Friday 18 Nov

The government recently announced a parliamentary inquiry into war powers in Australia. This is a critical issue for our democracy – we can’t allow one person or just a few people to decide to send troops into conflict overseas without parliamentary debate. As many people as possible are needed to write a submission to the inquiry. It need not be long, a few sentences or paragraphs with your views are sufficient. Of course more detailed ones are great. Details on how to submit can be found here. The right bar on the page has links to submissions already made if you want to see what others have said.

This inquiry needs to hear a loud and clear message from the Australian community – we want full transparency and accountability before we send troops to any war overseas, then there might not be a need for whistleblowers such as Assange and McBride to be coming forward.

The Australians for War Powers Reform (AWPR) have provided some tips to assist in writing a submission – see this page on their website – especially FAQ at the bottom of page
