World Press Freedom Day May 3rd acts as a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom. It is also a day of reflection among media professionals about issues of press freedom and professional ethics. Just as importantly, World Press Freedom Day is a day of support for media which are targets for the restraint, or abolition, of press freedom and a day of remembrance for those journalists who lost their lives in the pursuit of a story.

There is a Global war on journalism, and it is our freedom that is at stake. Journalists are under attack globally for doing their jobs and Julian Assange is at the centre of that war. WikiLeaks founder and Editor Julian Assange changed the face of what journalism could mean in the 21st century. By creating an encryption service so untraceable, even he can’t expose the source, he posed a very real threat to the multi-trillion dollar military industry.
Julian is a product of the Australian culture, a son of the soil, a person who did what we would all like to think we would do in his circumstances. It is because he is our wild colonial boy, that successive Australian governments have not dared say peep to either of our domineering colonial masters, the UK and the US.
Our ideals far outstrip the actions of our governments and often our own personal actions, so let’s all try and match our realities with our ideals, and support a fellow Australian mate, who exposed the dirty lies of Corporatocracy for all of us to see.
If we don’t stand up and make our voices heard, Julian could be locked away in a secret US prison for 175 years.
